Bangladesh Asks India To Extradite Ousted PM Sheikh Hasina, Cites Existing Treaty Obligation
Dhaka, Bangladesh: Bangladesh has asked India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal after a Dhaka court sentenced the duo to death for their alleged role in the 2024 student uprising.
The court had pointed out that it was proved that the former government heads were held accountable for crimes against humanity during the protest last year. The International Crimes Tribunal has ‘convicted and sentenced fugitives Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for the July massacre,’ as per an official release by the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry on Monday.
The statement noted that it would be a grave act of unfriendly behavior and a travesty of justice for any other country to grant asylum to these individuals convicted of crimes against humanity, while calling upon the Indian government to “immediately hand over these two convicted individuals to the Bangladeshi authorities.”
“This is also an obligation for India under the existing extradition treaty between the two countries,” the statement added.
