Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday (August 27) has announced his decision to retire from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The legendary spinner debuted in the league back in 2009 with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), playing 221 matches in the competition and picking up 187 wickets.

Ashwin played a crucial role in the CSK’s title wins in 2010 and 2011. In his final season, he took 7 wickets and scored 33 runs in 9 outings in the tournament.

Ashwin shared the news for retirement in a social media post. Taking to X, the 38-year-old wrote, “Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”

“Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the IPL and the BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me,” Ashwin added.

Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket last year. At the IPL 2025 mega-auction, he was acquired by CSK, for a price of Rs 9.75 crore. His return was widely celebrated as a homecoming, as he had previously played for the team from 2009 to 2015.

 

Ravichandran Ashwin played for the CSK from 2009 to 2015. He later played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant and Kings XI Punjab (now known as the Punjab Kings). At the IPL 2025 mega-auction, he was acquired by CSK for Rs 9.75 crore, and his return was widely celebrated as a homecoming.
