India Announces 450 Million Dollar Aid Package For Cyclone-Hit Sri Lanka

ColomboSri Lanka: India announced a 450 million dollar reconstruction package to support Cyclone Ditwah recovery in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, December, 23. The declaration was made during External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar’s visit to Sri Lanka as special envoy of Prime Minister Modi.

The announcement was made at a joint press with Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. Jaishankar met Sri Lankan president Anura Kumara Dissanayake and handled over PM Narendra Modi’s letter.

The external affair minister said that the package included a 350 million concessionary line of credit and 100 million dollar in grants, aimed at supporting the rebuilding of cyclone-affected regions of the nation.

The assistance will cover sectors worst affected by this cyclone, including rehabilitation and restoration of road, railway and bridge connectivity, support for the construction of houses fully destroyed and partially damaged. He further pointed out India’s neighbourhood first and Mahasagar policy.

The minister had a detailed discussion on the damage caused by the Cyclone.
