Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement From Test Cricket
India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, has announced his immediate retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old made the announcement via an Instagram post, stating, “It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
Sharma’s decision comes after a distinguished Test career spanning over a decade. He made his Test debut in 2013 and has since played 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. His leadership saw India reach the World Test Championship final in 2023.
The announcement follows a period of scrutiny over Sharma’s form in the longer format. Recent performances, including a challenging series against Australia, had led to speculation about his future in Test cricket.
With Sharma stepping down, the Indian cricket team faces the task of appointing a new Test captain ahead of their upcoming series. Potential successors include Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant.
