Shubman Gill New India ODI Captain; Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Return
Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of the One Day International team for the upcoming three-match series against Australia, beginning on October 19. The announcement was made by chief selector Ajit Agarkar after a selection meeting held in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 4.
Former skippers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retain their places in the squad, signalling a blend of experience and youth under Gill’s leadership. Shreyas Iyer, who recently returned from injury, has been named vice-captain – a position previously held by Gill before his elevation to the top role.
Confirming the move, Agarkar said during the press conference, “Yes, he (Rohit) was communicated about the decision,” referring to discussions with the senior opener before the leadership change was finalised.
Gill’s appointment reflects the selectors’ intention to groom the next generation of leaders while maintaining stability with senior players around. The 25-year-old batsman has been one of India’s most consistent performers across formats in recent years and now takes on his first major leadership assignment on foreign soil.
