Produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures, along with Amul V Mohan and Anshul Mohan, The Sabarmati Report movie claims to be based on the real events surrounding the burning of the Sabarmati Express in Godhra in 2002, killing 59 people, mostly Hindu pilgrims and karsevaks returning from Ayodhya. The movie is alleged to be political propaganda dressed in a factual thriller, presenting only one aspect of the incident.
It was alleged that the right-wing groups used and abused the incident, resulting in a widely polarised Gujarat for political gains. Then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi was alleged to have been complicit in the following riots that killed over 1,000 people, mostly from the Muslim minorities, by allegedly giving a free hand to the rioters to unleash violence against the victims.
