The Indian National Congress has fielded the former Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Ujjwal Raman Singh, who joined the Congress recently, vowing to defeat the BJP from the Allahabad constituency.

While he was joining the grand old party on April 3, Ujjwal Raman stated that the constitution was in danger. “I have decided to join the Congress to defeat the BJP from Allahabad in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. I will give the Allahabad Lok Sabha seat to the Congress.” He was set to be the party”s candidate from Allahabad. He also expressed his gratitude to the Congress party leadership and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. SP and Congress have allied to right the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. 

The two-time SP MLA is the son of the former eight-time MP Rewati Raman Singh. A former Cabinet Minister, Ujjwal Raman was first elected to the state assembly from Karachana constituency in 2004 on Samajwadi Party”s ticket. In the 2017 assembly elections, he was re-elected again from the Karachana segment. In 2022, Ujjwal Raman lost to the BJP”s Piyush Ranjan Nishad. Karachhana belongs to the Allahabad Lok Sabha constituency. 

The two-time SP MLA is all set to take on the BJP”s Neeraj Tripathi the saffron party has been consecutively representing the seat after it wrested the seat from the SP”s Kunwar Rewati Raman Singh in the 2014 general elections. The SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has also extended full support to his nomination on the Congress ticket and is believed that the former SP MLA joined the Congress with the consent of the Akhilesh Yadav. Allahabad consists of the total 17 seats Congress received as per the seat-sharing agreement held between SP and Congress. 

Notably, the BJP has replaced the sitting MP Rita Bahuguna Joshi by fielding Neeraj Tripathi from Allahabad constituency. An intense battle is anticipated for the seat for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The constituency will go to the polling booths on May 25.
