Congress Fields Dr Tushar Chaudhary Against BJP’s Shobhna Baraiya From Gujarat’s Sabarkantha

Edited by Fathimathu Shana

Sabarkantha is at the heart of the Gujarat’s electoral fights. The battle is between Shobhna Baraiya of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Dr Tushar Chaudhary of the Indian National Congress. Chaudhary is considered as a seasoned politician. He holds a substantial track record to be a candidate for Sabarkantha.

Chaudhary’s political career is marked by highs and lows of the election, inking his enduring presence in people’s heart. The 58-year-old politician held several responsibilities through out his political career including serving as the Union Minister of state for Tribal Affairs from 2009 to 2011. He also served as Union Minister of state for Transport and Highway from 2011 to 2012. Chaudhary was elected as the Member of Parliament for the first time in 2004 from Mandvi constituency. He was also elected as the MP from Bardoli constituency in 2009. Chaudhary was elected as the Member of Gujarat Legislative Assembly during 2022, from Mahuva constituency.

Hailed from the Bedkuvta Valod village of Gujarat, Chaudhary is the son of Amarsinh Chaudhary, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Congress hopes that Chaudhary can win the seat against BJP’s Shobhna Baraiya, as the latter is facing opposition from not only the people of region, but from her own party also. Reportedly, some of the BJP workers are not happy with Braiya’s candidacy, who replaced Bhikhaji Thakor. The fact that Baraiya is a new comer and gained ticket to contest the Lok Sabha election has garnered frown towards the party authority’s rationale. Congress hopes that the fall within the party and opposition from the people against Baraiya will work in favour to them.
