Mumbai, August 20: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge today said that the fight to save the Constitution was still on and it was important that INDIA bloc wins maximum states to get adequate numbers in the Rajya Sabha.

Addressing the Sadbhavna Sammelan to commemorate the eightieth birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi here today, Kharge said, even after getting 415 seats, Rajiv Gandhi showed no arrogance.

He said, Gandhi transformed India and put it on the progressive path of development for the twenty-first century.

Congress president pointed out the growth rate was over ten percent during Gandhi’s time which was a record in itself. He said, the computerisation programme launched by Gandhi had borne the fruits and that is the reason India had become the software powerhouse.

Similarly, he referred to Gandhi’s revolutionary decision to bring down the voting age from 21 to 18 years.

He said, Gandhi had launched the universal vaccination programme among children way back in 1985 to ensure health for all.

Kharge said, Gandhi had brought the anti-defection law to protect the elected governments. In stark contrast, he said, Modi was uprooting the elected governments. He pointed out how elected governments were stolen in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and other states.

Appealing people to vote for the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi in the Assembly elections ahead, he said, the fight to save the constitution was not finished as yet.

He said, it was very important for the INDIA bloc to win the state elections as from there members to Rajya Sabha get elected. He said, once INDIA bloc has sufficient members in the RS Modi cannot change the constitution.

Congress president observed that the Modi government had realised the people’s power as it can no longer go ahead bulldozing the laws without any resistance.

He said, the withdrawal of the lateral entry decision in the IAS by the Modi government was the victory of the people.

Prominent leaders present on the occasion included Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, Ramesh Chennithala, Nana Patole, Mukul Wasnik, Sushil Kumar Shinde and others.
