Son of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala, Aditiya Surjewala won the Kaithal seat in Haryana by 8,124 votes. The 25-year-old leader secured 83,744 votes, defeating BJP candidate Leela Ram, who won 75,620 votes.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Anil Tanwer came in third with 3,428 votes.
In the 2019 assembly elections, Leela Ram defeated Randeep Surjewala by a mere 1,246 votes.
Following his late grandfather Shamsher Singh Surjewala and father Randeep, the recent graduate from the University of British Columbia is following in the footsteps of his family.
The young Congress leader actively campaigned with his father with the slogan “Kaam He Pehchan (Work Is Recognition)” highlighting voters of the development during his father’s tenure.
Kaithal, one of the 90 assembly constituencies in Haryana, was first won by Aditya’s grandfather, Shamsher Singh Surjewala, in 2005. His father, Randeep Surjewala, also won the seat in 2009 and 2014 before losing it in 2019 and then the 2020 assembly by-elections from Jind.
