The 2024 Lok Sabha polls are the first election in Assam after the delimitation of the Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies. The Kaziranga Lok Sabha constituency was formed as the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency in Assam was completely abolished. The BJP has named Kamakhya Prasad Tasa as the party candidate from the newly formed constituency for the upcoming elections.

Kamakhya Prasad Tasa has been associated with the saffron party for a long time. He was the BJP MP from Assam”s Jorhat Constituency from 2014 to 2019. In the 2014 general elections, the BJP leader won the seat by securing a total of 4,56,420 votes. Kamakhya Prasad Tasa defeated six-time Congress MP and former Union minister late Bijoy Krishna Handique by a margin of 1,02,420 votes. It was a significant victory for the BJP, as Jorhat was the stronghold of Congress.

However, the party did not field him in the previous Lok Sabha polls. In 2019, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from the state. In July 2023, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa was appointed as the National Secretary of the BJP.

Kamakhya Prasad Tasa was the prominent face of the tea tribe community in the state. It is to be noted that Assam is the country”s largest tea producer. The tea industry in Assam provides a livelihood to thousands, with many others directly or indirectly dependent on the plantation sector. Tea workers are one of the major deciding factors in several seats in Assam. The BJP decided to give ticket to Kamakhya Prasad Tasa as the electoral behavior of the tea tribes is crucial in the 2024 general elections.
