Zubeen Garg Death: Assam Bans Shri Syamkanu Mahanta, Linked Firms From Holding Events

Guwahati, Assam: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that the state government has decided to prohibit Shri Syamkanu Mahanta and any organization associated with him from holding any functions or festivals within the state. The decision follows multiple FIRs against Shyam Kanu Mahanta, the chief organizer of the Northeast Festival, where the Ya Ali-famed singer, Zubeen Garg.

The chief minister further said that the government will not provide any financial grant, advertisement, or sponsorship to any event with which he is associated, either directly or indirectly. “The State Government will also request the Government of India not to extend any financial assistance or sponsorship to him in any manner,” Sarma wrote on X.

The 52-year-old singer had reached Singapore for the Northeast Festival, an annual event scheduled from September 19 to 21, and was set to perform there. Garg was  reportedly on a yacht with a few Assamese based in Singapore and members of his team when he experienced breathlessness and a seizure while swimming.

After the incident, the singer was given CPR and rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was declared dead around 2.50 pm IST on September 19, Friday.
