'Political Battle Fought In Court': Supreme Court On CPI(M)'s Plea Against Assam CM's Hate Speech, Violent Video

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday responded to two petitions filed against hate speech allegedly made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. While mentioning the listing, the top court remarked that the problem is that when elections come, they are often fought in the Supreme Court only, adding that it will see the case, Bar and Bench reported.

Advocate Nizam Pasha, on behalf of one of the petitioners, had submitted the petition before the apex court including the video in which the Assam chief minister was seen taking a gun shot at the Muslims while noting inflammatory remarks.

The petitions were filed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and communist leader Annie Raja marking their objection to a public speech delivered by chief minister Sarma on January 27, as well as the video shared on BJP Assam unit’s X handle depicting Himanta Sarm discharging a firearm towards an animated image of two visibly Muslim men.

In his January speech, the Assam chief minister had stated that four to five lakh Miya voters” would be removed from the electoral rolls, adding that “Hemant Biswa Sarma and the BJP are directly against Miyas.” The term Miya is used to address Muslims in a derogatory manner in the region.
