Supreme Court Constitutes Committee To Probe Police Brutality Against CJP Protesters At Jantar Mantar
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday, August 20, constituted a 5-member committee to probe allegations of police excesses against Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protestors. The committee will be headed by retired Supreme Court justice R Subhash Reddy.
The committee include former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, former Delhi High Court Justice Shalinder Kaur, former CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla and former Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi.
A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana passed the order constituting the committee to investigate the allegations of police brutality against students during the Jantar Mantar protest.
The top court entrusted the committee with the task of finding the facts, clarifying that the committee will examine allegations regarding assault, online harassment of female demonstrators, and the victimisation of other vulnerable persons through social media platforms.
The committee will probe police excesses as well as protestor violence. The court has directed the committee to give priority to allegations of harassment and molestation of women protestors, examine grievous injuries caused to protestors by police action, ensure preservation of CCTV, drone, body cam and PCR call records from the protests, release detained minors, except those facing grave and heinous charges and the protection of protestors’ personal data, public disclosure of data barred.
