
Ya Ali Singer Zubeen Garg Dies; PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi,... Pay Tributes; "In People's Heart Forever"
Noted Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who rose to national fame with his superhit song Ya Ali, died in a scuba diving accident in Singapore on Friday, leaving fans in deep pain. He was 52 years, and the singer fell into the water while diving and was rescued by Singapore police. Garg was scheduled to perform at the North East Festival today.
After the singer fell into the water, the Singapore police rushed him to a nearby hospital. Though doctors put him under intensive care, he did not survive. Considered a loss to the Indian music industry, Garg’s death is being mourned across the fields.

Organisers of the North East Festival announced the news in a statement, “It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Zubeen Garg’s passing. While scuba diving, he experienced breathing difficulties and was immediately given CPR before being rushed to Singapore General Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was declared dead in the ICU around 2.30 pm IST.”
Celebrated for blending Assamese folk with Bollywood hits like “Ya Ali,” Garg leaves a profound legacy as a singer, composer, actor, and cultural icon of Assam, with tributes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and figures across politics and music, as Assam observes state mourning and arranges repatriation of his remains.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X and wrote that the singer will be remembered for his rich contribution to music. “His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister wrote on X.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said the singer defined a generation, and his talent was truly unmatched. “He overcame personal tragedies to reshape the landscape of Assamese music. His perseverance and courage have left an enduring mark,” the Congress leader wrote, adding that Garg will will in people’s heart and minds forever.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lamented he is in a loss of words to describe what Zubeen meant for Assam. “Zubeen’s voice had an unmatched ability to energise people and his music spoke directly to our minds and souls. He has left a void that will never be filled. Our future generations will remember him as a stalwart of Assam’s culture, and his works will inspire many more talented artists in the days and years to come,” the chief minister wrote on X.
Himanta further noted that beyond music, the singer’s connection with people and passion for helping them will always be remembered. “I will greatly cherish all my interactions with him. That magical voice has forever gone silent. Tragic beyond words! I grieve with my fellow citizens on the passing away of Zubeen. Rest well, Zubeen! You will always be Assam’s favourite rockstar,” the chief minister said.
