Ahead of the Congress candidate list announcement, the lone Lok Sabha Congress MP from Madhya Pradesh, Nakul Nath declared his candidature for the upcoming general elections from the Chhindwara seat. This will be the first time sitting MP Nakul Nath, not his former parliamentarian father Kamal Nath, will be contesting the coming Lok Sabha polls from Chhindwara.
The announcement was made by Nakul during a “Karyakarta Abhaar Sammelan” in Chhindwara in the presence of his father. “This time too, I will be your candidate for Lok Sabha elections. Rumours are going around whether Kamal Nath or Nakul Nath would contest the election. I would like to make it clear that Kamal Nath would not contest the election, I will,” announced Nakul Nath.
He said, “There is groupism in Assembly elections as there are too many (probable) candidates but Lok Sabha polls are different. There is no factionalism in Lok Sabha polls because there is only one candidate. I will be your candidate.”
Despite the BJP”s victory in the other 28 seats in the state in the 2019 elections, Nakul Nath secured a win from Chhindwara.
“You have supported the Kamal Nath family for 42 years…I have full hope that you will give the same love, same trust and blessings…in the coming Lok Sabha elections,” the 49-year-old MP said.
Notably, Chhindwara has long remained Kamal Nath”s domain since he became an MP in 1980, losing once in a by-election in 1977 to the BJP. However, he regained it a year later. Kamal Nath held the seat for nine consecutive terms.
In the recent Assembly polls, Kamal Nath was replaced as MP Congress as the BJP retained power, winning 163 seats in the 230-member House. The Congress managed to win only 66 seats.
Former CM Nath and his MP son Nakul Nath are on a four-day visit to Chhindwara.
