The Entry Of Ranjit Dutta In Sonitpur On BJP Ticket

Ranjit Dutta has been fielded to represent the BJP in the Sonitpur constituency of Lok Sabha election 2024. The seasoned politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been representing the Behali constituency in the Assam Legislative Assembly.

His political journey spans multiple terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), the four-time MLA has been representing the party in the Behali Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2011, and then from 2016 to the present.

The veteran politician started his political career through the 2001 Assam Legislative Assembly election, where he represented the BJP, and secured 50.65% of the total vote, defeating the incumbent Congress MLA, Barnabash Tanti.

He continued his winning streak in the 2006 election as he triumphed over Nagen Gowala of INC by a margin of 8979 votes. Even though he lost the 2011 polls, when he was defeated by Pallab Lochan Das of Congress,  he made a significant comeback in the 2016 Assam Assembly elections by defeating Rupak Sarma of Congress by a margin of 23601 votes. In addition, Dutta won the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election, continuing his position as an MLA.

His leadership skills were further recognized when he served as a Cabinet Minister in the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government from 2016 to 2021, overseeing key portfolios such as Sericulture, Handloom and Textiles, Irrigation, and Welfare of Minorities. Looking into his educational background, he completed his Pre-University Examination (Two-Year Course) from Darrang College, Tezpur, under Gauhati University, in the year 1974-75.

In this Lok Sabha elections, he is competing against the Congress-fielded candidate Premlal Ganju, the Congress General Secretary of Assam.
