The much-awaited winners of the 72nd National Film Awards will be announced on Friday, July 3, celebrating the best of Indian cinema.

The prestigious awards honour films that received certification during the 2024 calendar year, with entries from several Indian languages competing across major categories.

The announcement is expected to reveal winners in categories such as Best Feature Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay, music, and several technical awards.

Among the Malayalam films attracting attention this year are Bramayugam, Manjummel Boys, and Kishkindha Kaandam. All three films received critical acclaim and strong audience response, making them among the prominent contenders at this year’s awards.

The jury for the 72nd National Film Awards is headed by filmmaker Jayaraj, who has previously served on the National Film Awards jury. An 11-member panel reviewed entries from across the country before finalising the recommendations for this year’s honours.

Malayalam cinema has a rich history at the National Film Awards, with celebrated filmmakers including Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shaji N. Karun, and Priyadarshan having served as jury chairpersons in previous editions.

The industry also performed well at the 71st National Film Awards. Veteran actor Vijayaraghavan won the Best Supporting Actor award for Pookkaalam, while Urvashi received the Best Supporting Actress honour for her performance in Ullozhukku.
