All You Need To Know About Mohanlal's 'L2: Empuraan'
Mohanlal and director Prithviraj Sukumar’s highly anticipated release of the blockbuster Lucifer‘s sequel L2: Empuraan is around the corner. The pan-Indian film is all set to hit theaters on March 27. And here is all you need to know about the film and its extravagant production.
The second installment of the planned trilogy, L2: Empuraan, is said to revolve around the aftermath of the events from the first installment. The upcoming film will focus on what transpired after Stephen Nedumpally orchestrated his brother Jatin’s rise to power as the head of state.
Beside its original release in Malayalam, the film would be released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.
CBFC certification and the modifications
Ahead of the release, the movie cleared the censor board with a U/A certificate with a runtime of three hours. However, 8 cuts were made in the final version of the film, based on the modifications requested by the CBFC board.
Violent scenes: 6 seconds
- A scene where women’s heads are banged multiple times against a wall may be reduced to a flash.
- A scene depicting sexual abuse against a woman is trimmed by half.
Dialogue Modification: 4 seconds
- A dialogue referring to the colours of the national flag was suggested to be removed, replaced or muted.

Expected trailer release date
Even though there has been no official confirmation from the makers, reports suggest that Empuraan’s much-awaited trailer is likely to be released on March 15. But the audience has to wait a little longer until the makers officially announce the trailer release.
Cast of L2: Empuraan
Mohanlal reprises his role as Khureshi Ab’raam / Stephen Nedumpally, leading an ensemble cast that includes Prithviraj Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Saniya Iyappan, Saikumar, Baiju Santhosh, Fazil, and Sachin Khedekar.
Moreover, this sequel also introduces actor Kaarthikeyaa Dev to the franchise. As per the announcement, Kaarthikeyaa will feature the young version of Zayed (Character No. 10), who appears to be a game changer of the plot. The Hollywood actor Jerome Flynn, who plays the character Boris, will also be a highlight of this sequel.
Plot of L2: Empuraan
The first installment, Lucifer, ends with Jatin’s rise to power while Stephen Nedumpally reveals his true identity as Khureshi Ab’raam. His transformation was also marked by the shots of him shedding his white attire for Khureshi’s darker and more stylish dapper.
However, this sequel will explore more about the dark world of Lucifer, where politics, power, and action collide. It is also expected to delve into Stephen’s origins, exploring his youth and his connection to Zayed Masood and the Khureshi-Ab’raam nexus.

Locations extensively covered in L2: Empuraan
As this sequel is set to explore the power and the character dynamics of the lead, Stephen Nedumpally/Khureshi Ab’raam, the film has been shot extensively across multiple locations. The lens of the cinematographer Sujith Vaassudev explored the lands of countries such as India, the US, the UK, and the UAE.
The key locations of the Indian schedule include Gujarat, Hyderabad, Faridabad, Shimla, Ladakh, Thiruvanathapuram and Kochi. Internationally, the team filmed in New York, New Mexico, Louisiana, San Francisco and Atlanta in the US and Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE.
