Mollywood’s May 2026 Box Office Storm: From ‘Patriot’ To ‘Drishyam 3’ – Here’s The Full Release List

May 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most electrifying months in recent Malayalam cinema history, with a relentless lineup of big-ticket releases, star-studded ensembles, and diverse storytelling.

From industry giants sharing screen space to intense thrillers, youth dramas, and even cross-industry competition, the box office is gearing up for a cinematic festival that could redefine audience expectations.

The biggest talking point is undoubtedly Patriot, scheduled for a worldwide release on May 1. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, this ambitious spy action thriller brings together two titans of Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal and Mammootty, sharing screen space after more than a decade.

It boasts a powerhouse ensemble including Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara, and Revathy.

The musical score for “Patriot,” composed by Sushin Shyam, accompanies a production that spans several regions, including Sri Lanka, London, and Kashmir.

The film’s extensive scale, impressive cast, and ambitious technical execution indicate a goal of achieving broad appeal across India.

Sharing the May Day spotlight is Varavu, directed by Shaji Kailas, starring Joju George. While details remain relatively under wraps, Joju’s recent track record of intense, character-driven performances adds intrigue, making Varavu a strong parallel contender at the box office.

Another notable May release is Kattalan, directed by Paul George and starring Antony Varghese in the lead.

A week later, on May 8, the spotlight shifts to Dridam, headlined by Shane Nigam.

The film revolves around a police officer thrust into a high-pressure murder investigation involving human remains, with just a week to crack the case.

Mid-May, however, is where things get truly crowded and fascinating. May 14 is stacked with multiple releases targeting different audience segments.

Leading the youth-centric charge is Athiradi, starring Tovino Thomas and Basil Joseph. The film follows a rebellious student reviving a banned college festival, triggering rivalry and chaos—promising a high-energy campus drama.

On the same day, another intriguing project arrives, signalling a continued focus on youth-driven narratives and intense character arcs.

Alongside these is Mollywood Times, directed by Abhinav Sunder Nayak. Described as “a hate letter to cinema,” the film stars Naslen K. Gafoor and Sharafudheen and dives into the inner workings and contradictions of the Malayalam film industry.

Given Nayak’s reputation after Mukundan Unni Associates, expectations are high for a sharp, satirical take.

Adding to the May 14 frenzy is the Tamil biggie Karuppu, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan. Directed by RJ Balaji, the film blends action and drama, and its release will likely impact Kerala box office dynamics, given Suriya’s strong fanbase in the state.

The momentum continues into the third week with the highly anticipated Drishyam 3, hitting theatres on May 21. Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the film marks the return of Mohanlal as Georgekutty, alongside Meena and the original cast.

As the concluding chapter of one of India’s most celebrated thriller franchises, Drishyam 3 carries immense expectations, both narratively and commercially.

The franchise’s legacy of gripping storytelling and unexpected twists makes this release one of the most crucial box office events of the year.
