Imtiaz Ali’s much awaited musical spectacle starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra’s trailer has dropped. Netflix’s Amar Singh Chamkila follows the untold story of Punjab’s original rockstar of the masses, Amar Singh Chamkila, who soared from the depths of poverty to become the highest record-selling artist of his time in the 1980s. However, his meteoric rise and unapologetic music also stirred controversy and ultimately led to his assassination at the tender age of 27.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Imtiaz Ali film is the collaboration between the legendary maestro AR Rahman, who is helming the music, and the prolific lyricist Irshad Kamil. This reunion of the trio marks their return to cinematic magic after nine years. The film”s soundtrack has already made waves with the release of two original songs, “Ishq Mitaye” and “Naram Kaalja,” which have quickly climbed the music charts.
The cherry on top is that both Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra have lent their voices to some of Chamkila”s iconic Punjabi songs, bringing a fresh and authentic touch to the film. What sets the musical apart is its innovative approach. For the first time, live music recordings of the two actors singing live in the Akhadaas will be used in the film, capturing the raw emotion and energy for an added touch of authenticity.
Director and writer Imtiaz Ali reflects on the film”s creation, observed that stories of young musicians challenging societal norms, undergoing unprecedented success and meeting violent ends are far too common a phenomenon. He added, “The life and times of Chamkila raised important questions for society but ultimately it is a celebration of the life of an artist, the story of a musician who could never give up his first love – Music.”
Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director of Original Films at Netflix India, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing Netflix’s commitment to telling unique and deeply rooted local stories. “Collaborating with Imtiaz, who has masterfully chronicled the life of Amar Singh Chamkila, is nothing short of inspiring,” she says.
Produced by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films, the movie promises to be a musical masterpiece that pays tribute to a musical legend while exploring art, society, and the price of fame. The film”s music is available on Saregama.
Amar Singh Chamkila will release on April 12 only on Netflix.
