In another development following the Hema Committee report has shaken the Malayalam film industry, actress Divya Gopinath has come up with allegations of inaction against the actors’ body AMMA. The young actress alleged that despite filing a complaint against actor Alencier Ley Lopez in 2018, no action was taken. She had made statements in the past that Alencier misbehaved with her on the sets of Abhasam movie.

Divya told Manorama News that AMMA has not responded to her complaints yet, and the complaint was that the senior actor tried to grope her during the movie shooting. Divya had also appeared in front of Hema Committee and given statement in this regard.

In another interview, Divya Gopinath told the Malayalam news channel Reporter that it is not for fame someone talking about such things openly and one can’t live in fear all the time. Divya says that women need safety in the workplace and there is no one to ask or tell whatever they are feeling.

Talking about AMMA, she said: “It is the responsibility of an association to resolve any problems faced by women in their profession. The organisation (AMMA) needs to take responsibility, but they are silent on such matters.”

Alencier Ley Lopez, who made his debut in the 1998 film Daya, is famous for his works Annayum Rasoolum, Njan Steve Lopez and Maheshinte Prathikaaram.

The Hema Committee was established in 2017 to investigate the challenges faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry, especially in the wake of a sexual assault case involving actor Dileep. The committee was chaired by retired High Court judge Justice Hema, along with veteran actor Sharada and former IAS officer KB Valsala Kumari.

Their report, which was submitted in 2019, brought to light the pervasive sexual harassment experienced by women in the industry. It particularly highlighted incidents where female actors faced unwanted advances before even beginning work. The report was made public last week.
