The Oscar nomination of 2024 came out as a “disappointment” to many. While snubs are inevitable during award ceremonies, the snub of ‘Barbie’ movie in the categories of ‘best actress’ and ‘best director’ has become a mammoth in the room. The absence of Barbie on best actress and best director categories on Oscar nomination, despite it being the first female-led movie to cross $1 billion worldwide, and the highest-grossing film of 2023 by taking in $1.44 billion worldwide, has sparked outrage on social media.

While Ryan Gosling, who played Ken in Barbie got nominated for Best Actor category, the director, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, who portrayed Barbie was snubbed from the 96th Academy Award nomination. Gosling reacted to the issue through a statement. He said that he was “honoured” to be nominated for best actor for “portraying a plastic doll called ken”, but is disappointed that Robbie and Gerwig was not nominated.

He said, “there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie”. He said no recognition would be possible for anyone on Barbie movie without the Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “talent, grit, and genius”.

Gosling said, “To say that I”m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees”, as quoted by BBC.

Gosling noted his happiness for actor America Ferrara who was nominated as best supporting actress. The actress said she was “incredibly disappointed” in Gerwig and Robbie not recognised in the major nomination categories.

However, internet is not ready digest the fact that their beloved “Barbie” is actually snubbed from Oscar. X (formerly twitter) is flooded with fans drawing parallel between the Oscar and Ken’s ‘Mojo Dojo Casa House’. It is a term from Barbie, in which Ryan Gosling’s character Ken transforms the Barbie land into ‘Kendom’, after discovering concepts of stereotypes and power about masculinity from the real world. Ken then turns the Dreamhouses into what he calls as a ‘Mojo Dojo Casa House’.

One user wrote that Oscar really is a “mojo dojo casa house”.

Another user wrote, “the Mojo Dojo Casa House energy of awarding an Oscar nomination for Ken but not Barbie or Best Director”

A user named Casey Telford could not believe Gerwig was nominated for best director. She said, “Greta Gerwig got snubbed for Best Director? The Academy is the true Mojo Dojo Casa House”.

Another user named Emma is disappointed that “unfortunately after a year full of celebrating girlhood & empowering women, we are still just Barbies in Ken’s mojo dojo casa house”.

Author Shannon Watts Oscar just goes to Ken when it was Greta Gerwig who actually made a “critically acclaimed, culturally profound, feminist movie about Barbie and the patriarchy that made a billion dollars at the box office”.

An account named ‘Barbie deserved better’ called Oscar award a “scam” and said that it has done Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig “dirty”. The post asked, “the straight white guy in Barbie got nominated and not the ACTUAL WOMEN WHO MADE THE MOVIE?”.

Barbie got total eight nomination in the Oscar 2024, including nomination for best picture. Greta Gerwig bagged the nod from the Academy Award on “Best Screenplay”, along her husband Noah Baumbach. Margot Robbie was recognised as a producer in the best picture line-up. Christopher Nola’s Oppenheimer is soaring high on the list with 13 nominations, with Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downy Jr were nominated for acting, and Nolan was recognised for his directing prowess. The 96TH Oscar Award ceremony will take place on March 10 in Los Angeles.
