Severe Cyclonic Storm Remal Crosses West Bengal, Bangladesh Coasts

Kolkata, May 27, 2024 – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that Severe Cyclonic Storm Remal has crossed the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Radar in Kolkata detected the cyclone crossing near Canning in West Bengal. Remal is currently about 80 km south-southeast of Canning and is moving northwards. The cyclone”s eye is entering land, and the landfall process over coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh is ongoing and expected to last for the next two hours.

In the past six hours, Remal has traveled north at a speed of 11 km/h. It is currently about 110 km east of Sagar Islands in West Bengal, 110 km west-southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh, 80 km south-southeast of Canning, and 100 km south-southwest of Mongla in Bangladesh.

Remal, which was expected to hit near Sagar Island and Khepupara by Sunday midnight, was bringing maximum sustained winds of 110-120 km/h, with gusts up to 135 km/h. The cyclone began as a deep depression over the Eastcentral Bay of Bengal on May 25, intensifying into a cyclonic storm by evening and becoming a severe cyclonic storm early on May 26. It continues to move northwards at a speed of 7 km/h.
