Timeline asked Grok, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot about the top misinformation sources on X and surprisingly, it named Musk himself as one of the most prominent spreaders of misinformation on the platform.

According to Grok, Musk’s influence and reach, especially around politics and Covid topics have contributed to the spread of misinformation.

The AI noted that Musk’s posts can gain credibility among followers, potentially affecting real-world events like elections.

Grok AI stated: “Elon Musk is often cited as one of the most influential figures on X. He has the highest number of followers, with estimates suggesting over 200 million followers as of October 2024. Musk’s posts often relate to his companies like Tesla and SpaceX, cryptocurrencies, and various global issues, which receive widespread engagement due to his status and his role in the platform’s ownership.”

Musk’s track record on X has been marred by controversies with many of his posts promoting or endorsing misinformation related to politics, health issues and conspiracy theories.

For instance, recent research has shown that false or misleading claims from Musk have been viewed almost 1.2 billion times on the platform without sufficient fact-checking or corrections.

Grok’s assessment highlights the subjective nature of misinformation, often tied to ideological stances and acknowledges the presence of other actors, bots, and entities contributing to the spread of misinformation.

The AI breaks down its answer into five sections: election misinformation, general misinformation, platform’s role, public and legal scrutiny, and impact.

While Musk promotes Grok’s AI features as highly accurate now his own AI has turned on him revealing he has been the top one among those who spread misinformation online.

Despite the AI’s assessment, Musk remains vocal against “legacy media” and asserts that “better information” from users can counter misinformation that he spoke about this own his X platform earlier.

This development comes as Musk has been under scrutiny for his role in the US presidential election and the spread of misinformation on X.
