Dharmasthala, Karnataka: On the sixth day of exhumation, over 100 bone fragments and skulls were discovered in Dharmasthala, where a former worker made an explosive revelation that he was forced to bury hundreds of women with marks of rape, triggering potential mass grave concerns in the temple town.

The skeleton remains including skull and spinal bones were found on the sixth day of the exhumation process in the forest area near the Netravati bathing ghat in Dharmasthala police station limits, around about 100 metres away from the 11th site shown by the complainant-witness, Decan Herald reported citing SIT sources.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) to whom the Karnataka government assigned the case has recovered 100 bone fragments so far. Skeletal remains were found at Sites 6 and 11-A as rain continued to trouble the digging activities. However, Police denied the advocates’ claim on Tuesday. Advocates, representing one of the complainants, had claimed that at least three human remains were discovered on the sixth day of exhumation from Site 11-A, adding that a saree was also reportedly recovered from the same spot.

The masked whistleblower and former sanitation worker has revealed that he was coerced into disposing of the bodies of women and minors between 1998 and 2014. He alleged that the burial spots are spread across the banks of the Nethravathi River, the highway, and nearby forested areas in Dharmasthala. The man has been escorted to locate the places and exhume for potential remnants of the bodies.

The bone remnants were found in locations flagged by the witness complainant. Forensic experts are examining the samples for confirmation. As there have been multiple missing cases registered in the past few decades, police are investigating the potential link between the skeleton and the missing people.

On August 3, a new witness came forward stating he saw the body of a girl being buried in violation of procedure 15 years ago, according to a report by The News Minutes.

Appearing before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) at its office in Belthangady taluk, the 48-year-old man claimed that he witnessed the burial of the decomposed body of a teenage girl in Dharmasthala-Ujire. He has also said that he has direct knowledge of many illegal burials in the village of Dharamsthala, the report added.

Notably, several users on X have started noticing the mainstream media are reluctant to give adequate attention to the Dharmasthala case, despite the horrific nature of the revelation and the subsequent evidence during the exhumation process. A user, Advaid, wrote, “Insane how quickly this vanished from Indian mainstream media headlines,” while sharing the significant update in the digging process.
