After the Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai recently claimed that the late Chief Minister and icon of the Dravidian movement, CN Annadurai, insulted Hinduism during an event in Madurai in 1956, and that the late leader had to hide in Madurai after his remark, only being able to travel after issuing an apology, the NDA partner AIADMK broke its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
CN Annadurai was the mentor of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) founder MGR, and the party has been named after Mr. Annadurai. He was the last Chief Minister of Madras State and the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after its formation in 1969.
AIADMK leader D Jayakumar the party will decide on the alliance before the election.
“Annamalai is unfit to be the BJP”s state president… He speaks ill of late leaders only to project himself,” NDTV quoted Mr Jayakumar as saying.
However, according to the news channel, top BJP sources have said the matter will be sorted out.
“Annamalai doesn”t desire alliance with AIADMK although BJP workers want it. Should we tolerate all this criticism of our leaders. Why should we carry you? BJP can”t set foot here. Your vote bank is known. You are known because of us,” India Today quoted the former minister.
Mr Jayakumar also claimed that the BJP chief had insulted the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK icon, J Jayalalithaa, and mentioned that the party has requested the BJP to restrain their state leader.
The rumour is that the BJP had asked for 15 Lok Sabha seats from the total 39 seats in the state during the last meeting with AIADMK’s Edappadi K Palaniswami when he visited Delhi to have discussions with the national party’s top leadership. Currently, BJP has no Lok Sabha representatives from Tamil Nadu as AIADMK has one. Meanwhile, BJP has 4 MLAs in the state from the total 234 and AIADMK has 66.
