All-Faith Rally By West Bengal Chief Minister Amid Ram Temple Inauguration; Security Beefed Up

Amid the ruling BJP’s much celebrated Ram temple inauguration today, All Indian Trinamool Congress (AITC) is organizing an all-faith rally emphasizing brotherhood, oneness and religious coexistence.

The party in its X handle urged people to take part in the “Sanhati Rally.” “Today, Smt Mamata Banerjee and Shri Abhishek Banerjee will march together in the “Sanhati Rally” emphasising the message of oneness of all religions. Join us today, in our commitment to unity, where the beauty of every faith converges into a powerful force for positive change,” the post reads. The post also shared a route map of the rally, showing the details of the temple, masjid, churches, garcha etc that the rally will be covering.

The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced that she will conduct a mega religions harmony rally on January 22, (today) stressing the religious equality. Announcing her Kalighat Temple visit on January 22, Mamata Banerjee said:  “On the same day, my party members will hold a rally in every block, in every district at 3 pm. It will be a Sampriti rally with the theme, all religions are equal.”

The consecration of the Ram temple today occurs after completing the partial construction of the temple. The construction started after the Supreme Court in 2019 ruled in favour of the temple in the Babari Masjid Ramjanmabhumi case. The Masjid, which was there for more than 500 years, was demolished in 1992 by a group of saffron camp, led by the BJP and VHP leaders after the group claimed the masjid stood at the birthplace of Lord Ram. However, many opposition parties including the Congress party have alleged that the temple event is merely a “BJP/RSS event,” noting that it is the BJP’s manoeuvres to extract political benefits foreseeing the upcoming general election. The opposition had also pointed out the allegations of India’s Sharnkaracharyas against the consecration of the temple before the completion of the temple’s construction terming it “against Sanatana Dharma.”

However, amid the potential processions by the Hindu outfits in Kolkata along with the all-faith rally announced by the Chief Minister, West Bengal has beefed up its security in several locations. Additional police force has been deployed at sensitive locations as the BJP has planned to take out processions, marking the Ram temple inauguration.
