BJP’s Dushyant Gautam At Center Of Storm As Ankita Bhandari Case 'VIP' Angle Reopens
Four years after the brutal murder of 19-year-old receptionist Ankita Bhandari sent shockwaves across the country, the ghost of the unresolved “VIP” angle has returned to trigger a massive political showdown in the national capital.
On Thursday, Delhi Police personnel moved in to forcibly detain Ankita’s aging parents, who were staging an overnight sit-in protest at India Gate.
Backed by senior opposition figures, including Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the demonstration has brought national scrutiny back to a case that many believed had concluded in the trial courts.

In September 2022, Ankita Bhandari was murdered by drowning in the Chilla canal near Rishikesh.

Investigations and WhatsApp chats revealed she was killed because she fiercely resisted intense pressure from the resort owner, Pulkit Arya, the son of a local politician, to provide “special sexual services” to an elite guest staying at the property.
While an Uttarakhand Sessions Court sentenced Pulkit Arya and his two managers to rigorous life imprisonment in May 2025, the identity of the high-profile individual behind the sexual coercion was never legally established.
The controversy erupted into the mainstream this week following the central government’s announcement on October 12, 2026, appointing senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Uttarakhand party in-charge Dushyant Kumar Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim.
Ankita’s family has publicly alleged that Gautam is the powerful figure whose identity authorities have spent years attempting to shield.
It is crucial to state that these allegations stem directly from the victim’s family and political activists; Gautam has never been officially named as an accused in the police chargesheet.

The newly appointed Governor has vehemently denied any involvement, terming the allegations malicious, and has already initiated defamation proceedings against those linking him to the crime.
The Congress party and Ankita’s parents argue that elevating Gautam to a gubernatorial post effectively places him beyond the reach of the law.
Under Article 361 of the Indian Constitution, a sitting Governor enjoys immunity from criminal proceedings, meaning that even as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its active probe into the VIP link, they cannot legally interrogate or prosecute a head of state.
Following their brief detention and subsequent release by the Delhi Police, Ankita’s father, Virendra Bhandari, issued a strict 24-hour ultimatum to President Droupadi Murmu and the central government.
The family is demanding an immediate freeze on Gautam’s gubernatorial appointment until the CBI concludes its investigation into the resort’s elite guest list.
