“Bollywood’s Desperation To Get A Click With David Beckham”: Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi
Congress Member of Parliament and senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Saturday took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle and criticised Bollywood actors who host and took pictures with the English iconic footballer David Beckham in the recent days. Mr Beckham was on a tour to India as an ambassador of the humanitarian organisation UNICEF (United Nations International Children”s Emergency Fund). He also attended the India vs New Zealand semifinal match of the ongoing ICC Men’s World Cup, at Mumbai’s Wankhade stadium.
Several Bollywood stars met Mr Beckham including Shah Rukh Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Sara Ali Khan and many more. They all took pictures to social media and expressed delight. To this, the Congress MP reacted as “Indians obsession with goras”. Goras is a term used to denote ‘White’ people or British or English men. “Doesnt matter where do you stand, goras are still a powerful source of legitimation”, Mr Singhvi added on X.

Mr Beckham, the legendary English former professional footballer, is the current president and co-owner of Inter Miami and co-owner of Salford City. He visited India to witness the impact of UNICEF-supported programmes on girls and women in rural parts of the nation. For that he spent time with children in Gujarat and also posted few pictures with them on social media.
Later he was invited by Sachin Tendulkar to watch the India-New Zealand semifinal match and engaged with top Indian cricket celebrities including Virat Kohli, Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and former cricketer Ravi Shastri. Mr Beckham, after completing his duties in Gujarat was later invited by Bollywood super star Shah Rukh Khan for an intimate dinner at Mannat. He also attended a gathering hosted by Sonam Kapoor and her husband Anand Ahuja.

The footballer also met Malaika Arora, Arjun Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Maheep Kapoor, Shanaya Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Mira Rajput, Shahid Kapoor, Harshvarrdhan Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Shibani Dandekar, and Sara Ali Khan. Bollywood fan sports meet ended up with stars posting multiple pictures of them with Mr Beckham on social media. Mr Beckham also took a few to his social media.

Mr Beckham was hosted by Sonam Kapoor and her wife initially, and next day before departure, met Shah Rukh Khan. “Honoured to have been welcomed into this great man’s home. To enjoy a meal with @iamsrk, @gaurikhan, their beautiful children and close friends – what a special way to end my first visit to India… Thank you my friend – you and your family are welcome any time in my home…@sonamkapoor and @anandahuja – you hosted me with such warmth and kindness this week, thank you for the amazing evening you created at your home – see you again soon”, he took to Instagram.
