New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday filed an FIR against the BJP IT Cell chief, Amit Malviya, and Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami for allegedly spreading false information that the Istanbul Congress Centre in Turkey is the international office of the Indian National Congress (INC), police officials said.

A case has been registered at High Grounds police station based on the complaint filed by Shrikant Swaroop BN, head of the Indian Youth Congress’s legal cell.

Following Operation Sindoor, the public mood has been strongly against Turkey after the country expressed its solidarity with Pakistan. Bookings for Turkey have been cancelled, universities have cancelled programmes with their Turkish counterparts, and Turkish firms operating in India are being given marching orders.

Amidst this, the Congress alleged that Malviya and Goswami’s “calculated misuse of influence to spread false information with criminal intent demands the harshest response,” stated the FIR.

Calling it a “malicious attempt” to malign the party, the Congress Legal Cell slammed Malviya and Goswami for trying to “provoke unrest, undermine national security” and make a direct attack on democracy.

“Let this be a clear message: Any attempt to spread fake news against our party or its leadership will be met with firm legal and political response,” it added.

Both Malviya and Goswami have been booked under Sections 192 and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Earlier on Tuesday, Malviya had posted an image comparing Rahul Gandhi to Pakistan’s military leadership and accusing him of echoing Pakistan’s stance on Operation Sindoor and undermining India’s military.
