It’s not uncommon for individuals to make significant life changes, including renouncing material possessions and desires to pursue spiritual paths.

Meet Abhey Singh, who is a former aerospace engineer from IIT Bombay and has taken the internet by storm with his journey from the world of science to spirituality, as he is currently trending in the social media space. Dubbed the “IITian Baba,” Abhey’s story has captivated millions, inspiring a mix of awe and wonder.

Born in Haryana, Abhey Singh claims that his academic excellence earned him a coveted seat at IIT Bombay, where he pursued aerospace engineering.

After graduating, he worked as a teacher at a coaching centre for a year while also nurturing his passion for photography. Abhey’s initial foray into the world of arts was inspired by the Bollywood movie 3 Idiots, which sparked his desire to explore the creative side of life.

However, Abhey’s thirst for knowledge and meaning soon led him to learn philosophy. He started spending time knowing the works of renowned philosophers like Socrates and Plato and about postmodernism, seeking answers to life’s fundamental questions.

Abhey began to realise that true knowledge and understanding lay beyond the realm of science and technology. Abhey’s transformation from an engineer to a spiritual seeker was not an overnight process, he disclosed during an interview with CNN-News18.

“I have pursued aerospace engineering from IIT Bombay,” he said in the interview taken on account of the Mahakumbh 2025. “You look for the meaning of life. Even while I was studying engineering, I took philosophy courses – Post Modernism, Socrates, Plato – to understand what is the meaning of life.”

“I lived in Bombay for four years. Later, I switched to photography and the arts, just like 3 idiots. I taught at a coaching centre after graduation for one year. Meanwhile, I prepared for an entrance exam in photography,” he explained.

However, he claimed that he left behind a lucrative job package of Rs 36 lakhs in Canada, his girlfriend, and addictions to cigarettes and alcohol to become a monk.

When asked how he arrived at his current state, the monk replied, “Ye awastha toh sabse best awastha hai (This state is the best state).” He further added, “If you keep pursuing knowledge, where do you reach? This is where you reach.”

As the “IITian Baba,” Abhay Singh has become an unlikely hero for many; social media is abuzz with praise for his transformation from ‘macho to monk.’ On the contrary, there is no extensive verification found to prove any of his claims yet.
