A bridge which was under construction, collapsed at Sairang area which is 21 kms near Aizawl. At least 17 workers are killed and many injured, real numbers are yet to come in. The officials said that there were about 35-40 workers on the site when the bridge collapsed, reported NDTV.
The Chief Minister, Zoramthanga tweeted that rescue operations are underway, adding that, “Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations.”
Prime Minister Modi, expressed his pain by tweeting, “Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMMRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured.”
The Northeast Frontier Railways said that their team has hurried to the place of accident but is yet to give more details on it.
Meanwhile, the locals, including Young Mizo Association, local police and securities have begun rescue operations with more forces already on the way.
This 51 kms project is one of the ambitious of the railways where the government and the private are working together.
