Over 17 Lakh Renounced Indian Citizenship Since 2011: External Affairs Ministry

After Sushil Kumar, the member of parliament (MP) raised a question regarding the number of people who left Indian citizenship by surrendering their passports over the past 10 years, the department of India’s External affair Ministry responded by providing the information that over 17.50 lakh people have given up their Indian citizenship since 2011.

The number has shockingly surged to 17.50 Lakh, with each year reporting an increasing number of people giving up their Indian passports. The reply by the External department says that 2,25,620 renounced their citizenship in 2022, which was 1,63,370 in 2021, registering a huge rise. The data indicated the shocking number of people leaving India with each year passing. According to the data, in 2011, a total of 1,22,819 individuals had left Indian citizenship, which has surprisingly doubled by 2022.

However, during the period between 2014 to 2022, the highest number of people who renounced their Indian passport was from Delhi, with 60,414 individuals left from the capital city, followed by Panjab with 28,117 people who left Indian citizenship. Gujarat recorded third, with 22,300 people leaving for foreign countries, according to official data from the government.

Though there are many gruesome stories of illegal immigrants getting trapped on the US-Canada border and dying over there, many people from different parts of the country still choose to bear the consequences of illegal immigration.

However, people from the villages of Gujarat and Panjab are daring the dire consequences with the hope of a better future. Among the lowest number of people who renounced their Indian citizenship were from Andaman & Nicobar, recording the lowest number of passport surrenders. Only 16 people gave up their citizenship there.  Lakshadweep, Daman Diu and Sikkim followed Andaman & Nicobar by recording fewer number of individuals relinquishing Indian passports
