PM Modi Slams Congress For Callously Giving Away Katchatheevu To Sri Lanka

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lashed out at Congress for ‘callously giving away the Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka in the 1970s’. PM Modi’s remark came after a Right to Information (RTI) revealed the reports of how the Congress government led by Indira Gandhi government handed over the island to Sri Lanka.

Narendra Modi called the revelation “eye-opening and startling”. He also then accused the grand old party of weakening the country’s integrity and interests. He also shared the news article that gave detailed accounts of the event that has led to the overtaking of the island. By giving out the information on X, he wrote that the Congress party cannot be trusted.

“Eye opening and startling! New facts reveal how Congress callously gave away #Katchatheevu. This has angered every Indian and reaffirmed in people’s minds- we can’t ever trust Congress,” Modi wrote on X.

The document details were acquired by Tamil Nadu BJP state president K Annamalai through an RTI application, revealing Sri Lanka’s persistent efforts to claim 1.9 square kilometers of land approximately 20 kilometers from the Indian shore.

PM Modi concluded his post by taking a dig at the Congress party for weakening India’s integrity, “Weakening India’s unity, integrity and interests has been Congress’ way of working for 75 years and counting,” he wrote.

The Katchatheevu island, located between Rameswaram and Sri Lanka was traditionally used by both Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen. In 1974, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi accepted Katchatheevu as Sri Lankan territory.

Similarly, earlier this month PM Modi made an allegation against DMK during the rally at Kanyakumari on March 15. Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin alleged that Narendra Modi had “blatantly lied” that Tamil Nadu fishermen were facing trouble from Sri Lanka only due to the past “sin” of the DMK.
