President Droupadi Murmu nominated author and philanthropist Sudha Murty to Rajya Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the news in a social media post on Friday. Congratulating Sudha Murty, the prime minister said that her presence in the Upper House is a powerful testament to “Nari Shakti”. The announcement coincides with the International Women”s Day.

Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote: “I am delighted that the President of India has nominated Sudha Murty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji”s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our “Nari Shakti”, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation”s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure.

Besides an author and philanthropist, Sudha Murty is an educator. She is the former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. Sudha Murty is also a member of the public health care initiatives of the Gates Foundation.

She is married to Infosys co-founder, Narayan Murty. Akshata and Rohan are their two children. Akshata is married to Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the UK and leader of the Conservative Party.

Sudha Murty is a recipient of many honours including, Padma Shri, India”s fourth-highest civilian award in 2006, and Padma Bhushan, India”s third-highest civilian award in 2023.
