Pune, Maharashtra: Dr Ajay Taware, who is currently incarcerated at the Yerwada Central Jail following his arrest in the 2024 Pune Porsche crash for allegedly tampering with the blood samples of a 17-year-old boy accused, has been exposed in connection with another fraudulent, more serious act, the kidney transplant racket.

Police on Thursday arrested Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital’s former medical superintendent, Taware, for an alleged kidney transplant racket at a leading private hospital, after the officials uncovered his involvement in the racket following a complaint by the Deputy Director of the Health Services Board, Dr. Sanjog Kadam.

Police reportedly found illegal financial transactions during a transplant procedure, leading to the exposition of a well-organised network involving Dr Taware, hospital staff, brokers, donors, and recipients.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Nikhil Pingale said that the police have taken Dr Ajay Taware into custody in the 2022 kidney racket case, and that the accused will be produced before the court soon. Taware served as the head of the Regional Authorization Committee that approved kidney transplants when the alleged incident occurred. Police have additionally named at least 15 individuals in connection with the case so far. Taware will soon be officially named as a co-accused in the kidney transplant racket.

In 2022, Pune police have registered a case against 15 persons, including the managing trustee of the Ruby Hall Clinic and some of its employees, in connection with alleged malpractice during a kidney transplant procedure. Taware’s alleged involvement in the organ trafficking network came to light in the findings of a probe committee headed by a retired judge into a complaint was registered at the Koregaon Park Police Station.

Maharashtra Medical Council had suspended the medical registrations of Dr. Ajay Taware and Dr. Shrihari Halnor. Taware, who was previously the head of the Forensic Medicine Department at Sassoon General Hospital, has been linked to the incident. His suspension came in the wake of an illegal organ transplant case at Ruby Hall Clinic, following a complaint by a widow who alleged she had been promised 15 lakh in exchange for a kidney. However, he was reinstated reportedly based on a recommendation letter sent by former NCP(AP) MLA Sunil Tingre to Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif, India Today reported.

Documents recovered during the investigation of the Porsche accident case also pointed to Dr. Taware’s role in the kidney scam, the report cites sources.
