The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bengal branch expressed its deep disappointment following the Supreme Court’s recent proceedings on the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College on 9th August. In a statement, the IMA highlighted its dissatisfaction with both the court and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for failing to expedite the case and deliver swift justice to their colleague.
The association noted the court’s directive for protesting junior doctors to return to work by 5 PM the following day. They also rejected accusations that the junior doctors’ protests had caused hospital fatalities, asserting that services remained largely unaffected.
The IMA reaffirmed its unwavering support for the junior doctors, who are protesting against the murder and the broader health syndicate that enables such crimes. The association vowed that the protest would only grow stronger until justice was served, stating, “The protest will not die down, and we will leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of justice.”
This response followed the Supreme Court’s directive, which asked doctors to return to work while assuring them that their concerns regarding safety and security would be addressed. The court also urged the state government to make improvements such as installing CCTV cameras and providing necessary infrastructure in hospitals. However, the IMA remains resolute, criticising the slow pace of justice and the lack of action by both the state government and CBI.
The association pledged to continue its support for the junior doctors, maintaining that their fight for justice and against corruption within the health system would continue until concrete steps were taken to address these critical issues.
