
Sanghis Can Abuse Mughals But...: AIMIM Chief Owaisi Cites Mughal Order On Tax Waiver For Pilgrims
Hyderabad, Telangana: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday (April 13) shared an article from The Hindu detailing a Mughal document elucidating a tax waiver for pilgrims at Allahabad. “Sanghis can abuse the Mughals as much as they want, but history says something else,” Hyderabad MP remarked on X.
The article talked about a 250-year-old Mughal document issued by Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, Abul Muzaffar Jalaluddin Muhammad. The document, a royal decree, instructed officials in posted in the subah (province) of Allahabad that no levies or taxes were to be imposed on pilgrims for taking holy dip in the river Ganga.

Preserved at the Telangana State Archives and Research Institute (TSARI), the royal decree underlines how religious autonomy granted to pilgrims arriving from various parts of the country.
“The firman, is dated 1773, and is written in shikasta script, often described as ‘broken script’. It directs the mutaqaddiyan, who werepublic officers or clerks, and other senior officials monitoring movements along the river not to charge pilgrims who come for the holy dip or bath,” the Hindu quoted Zareena Parveen, the Director of TSARI, as saying.
The royal decree maintained that taking the holy dip should be considered as a religious ritual, and it should not be disrupted. Any violation of the order should be dealt in stern manner, it added.

Sharing the article, Owaisi wrote on X, “250 years ago, the Mughal Sultan had issued a decree. It says that no tax will be levied on devotees bathing in the Ganga. No one was threatened that their passport or license would be confiscated or they would be sent to jail.”
