New Delhi: In an usual move, Supreme Court judge Justice Sandeep Mehta has demanded the replacement of Rajasthan High Court Acting chief justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma alleging misuse of power and questionable activities.

Justice Sandeep Mehta wrote a letter to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant seeking immediate action against justice Sanjeev Sharma. Justice Sandeep Mehta had repeatedly urged the chief justice of India to appoint chief justice of Rajasthan from another high court. Mehta, which is a senior supreme court judge, was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Rajasthan High Court.

Justice Mehta had warned that continued failure to act is “wholly against the interest of the Institution. In his letter, justice Mehta had noted that there are innumerable instances of Mr. Justice Sharma, exercising powers as the Acting Chief Justice in a manner unbecoming of the leader of the institution.

“I have received several complaints about the judicial functioning of Mr. Justice S.P. Sharma which, prima facie, raise doubts on his integrity,” the judge noted in the letter. He also pointed out that several Judges of Rajasthan High Court have met him and expressed their anguish at the behaviour of Justice Sanjeev Sharma, who frequently threatens his colleague judges of retributive action including transfer claiming his closeness with the chief justice of India.

Justice Mehta also alleged that several complaints have been filed against Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma over the alleged manipulation of case listings and misuse of his administrative powers ahead of his retirement, which is due next month.
