Sexual Assault Allegations: Jamia Millia Islamia Terminates Contractual Faculty Member
New Delhi, March 26, 2025 – Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has terminated the services of an Assistant Professor (Contractual) from its Department of Political Science following his arrest in connection with a sexual assault complaint filed at New Friends Colony Police Station.
The university administration acted immediately upon receiving information about the case, emphasising its zero-tolerance policy towards violence against women, a statement from the central university said. JMI clarified that the individual was not a permanent faculty member but a temporary contractual employee and that the alleged incident occurred outside the university premises, making it a personal matter unrelated to the institution.
Despite this, JMI strongly condemned the alleged crime and reiterated its firm stance against any assault on the honour, dignity, and rights of women. The university stated that it trusts the legal system to ensure justice is served.
JMI also highlighted its commitment to preventing sexual harassment on campus, stating that it has a fully functional Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in compliance with the POSH Act, 2013. The university actively disseminates information about the committee to ensure accessibility for all stakeholders. Additionally, JMI conducts regular gender sensitisation workshops and lectures across its faculties, departments, and centres to create awareness about the provisions of the POSH Act and prevent sexual harassment.
JMI has also assured that it would continue taking proactive measures to uphold the dignity and rights of women on campus.
