Supreme Court Grants Bail To AAP MP Sanjay Singh

Supreme Court today, on March 2, granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh after spending six months in Jail in the liquor policy scam case. The bail was granted after the Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) stated that it has no objection in providing bail to the AAP leader.

The AAP leader was challenging his arrest and remand by the central agency in the money laundering case to the liquor scam. Earlier in February, Delhi High Court had rejected the AAP leader”s bail application while directing the trial court to speed up the proceedings. However, Sanjay Singh then approached the Supreme Court against the High Court judgement.

The bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta and PB explained that the AAP leader would be entitled to indulge in political activities during the bail period. Sanjay Singh was arrested by the central agency on October 4, 2023 after it conducted a raid at his residence in Delhi.

The three-judge bench said that they are granting bail to Sanjay Singh, adding that he can continue his political activities. The Court also asked the AAP leader not to make any comment on his role or anything associated with the liquor scam. The court, however, asked Singh not to give any comments about his role or anything to the Delhi liquor scam.

While delivering the judgement, the Supreme Court clarified that it is not expressing anything on the merits of the case and the AAP leader”s bail cannot be used as a precedent by others to secure a similar order. Notably, the ED”s statement of not having objection to bail came after the Supreme Court noted that Mr Sanjay Singh has been in jail for six months. The top Court also highlighted that the allegations of receiving bribe of Rs two crore can be tested during the trial.
