Tamil Nadu Government Formation LIVE: Vijay Alliance Reaches 120 MLAs

Tamil Nadu’s political drama took a major turn on Friday after actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay received crucial support from alliance partners, pushing his party closer to forming the next government in the state.

According to sources, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi chief Thol. Thirumavalavan officially submitted a support letter backing Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Soon after, the IUML also reportedly extended support to TVK, taking the alliance tally to 120 MLAs — above the required majority mark of 118 in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

The development has significantly strengthened Vijay’s claim to form the government after days of political uncertainty and negotiations.

As per the reports, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has now scheduled a meeting with Vijay following the latest support developments.

Reports also suggested that the Governor cancelled a planned visit to Kerala amid the fast-changing political situation in Tamil Nadu.

While earlier reports indicated there may not be a meeting on Friday, sources later confirmed that Vijay had received an appointment to meet the Governor in the evening.

Political sources believe that if the Governor formally accepts TVK’s majority claim, Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony as Chief Minister could take place as early as Sunday.

The situation had remained uncertain over the past few days as TVK struggled to gather enough support despite emerging as the single largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Uncertainty Over TVK Govt Formation Amid Buzz Over Potential DMK-AIADMK Pact In Tamil Nadu

The Congress party has reportedly backed TVK with the support of five MLAs, while CPI and CPI(M) have also extended support to Vijay’s alliance.

At the same time, political tensions continue to rise across Tamil Nadu.

The DMK criticised Congress for backing TVK and claimed the INDIA bloc had effectively collapsed in the state. Reports of possible talks between DMK and AIADMK also added to the intense political speculation.

Meanwhile, several AIADMK MLAs were reportedly moved to resorts in Puducherry amid fears of cross-voting and defections during the government formation process.

In another major development, a petition was reportedly filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Governor’s earlier refusal to invite Vijay to form the government.

The plea argued that determining majority support outside the Assembly was unconstitutional and that the majority should instead be tested on the Assembly floor.
