From Cinema Superstar To Political Giant: Vijay’s Historic Rise In Tamil Nadu Politics
Joseph Vijay, popularly known as “Thalapathy” Vijay, has scripted one of the most dramatic transformations in Indian public life, from being dismissed as a “nepo kid” in Tamil cinema to emerging as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the face of a new political wave.
Born as Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay on June 22, 1974, in Madras (now Chennai), Vijay was the son of filmmaker S. A. Chandrasekaran and singer Shoba Chandrasekhar.
Because of his film family background, critics initially labelled him an industry insider who got opportunities through connections rather than talent. Vijay entered films as a child artist in Vetri (1984) before debuting as a lead actor in Naalaiya Theerpu (1992), directed by his father.
The debut was heavily criticised. Reviewers mocked his appearance, screen presence, and acting skills. Many believed he would disappear after a few films.
The turning point came with films like Poove Unakkaga, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, Thullatha Manamum Thullum and Kushi.
These movies transformed Vijay into a family favourite across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Later, action blockbusters such as Ghilli, Pokkiri, Thuppakki, Kaththi, Mersal, Master and Leo cemented him as one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars.
His fan base evolved into a powerful grassroots network long before he formally entered politics.
Political observers believe Vijay’s transformation began during the late 2010s when several of his films faced political controversy and censorship debates.
Movies like Mersal and Sarkar openly touched on issues like GST, corruption, governance, healthcare, and electoral malpractice. The public response convinced Vijay that cinema alone was not enough to create social change.
Another major turning point came during the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) debate in 2019, when Vijay publicly spoke about protecting social and religious harmony. His statements significantly boosted his political image among youth and first-time voters.
At the same time, his fan organisation, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, started contesting local body elections. Their success at the grassroots level showed Vijay that his popularity could translate into votes.
One of the incidents that reportedly deepened Vijay’s political thinking was the tragic suicide of a young student who was unable to secure admission to medical studies after the introduction of the NEET examination system.
The incident created a massive emotional debate across Tamil Nadu, where many believed students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds were being pushed out of medical education opportunities.
Vijay openly expressed concern over the pressure faced by students and later intensified his criticism of education inequality through both his public speeches and film dialogues.
Political observers say the tragedy had a strong impact on him personally, reinforcing his belief that social issues could not be addressed through cinema alone and that direct political participation was necessary to bring policy-level change.
On February 2, 2024, Vijay officially announced the launch of his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking the beginning of a new chapter in Tamil Nadu politics.
The announcement immediately created a political storm across the state, as Vijay positioned TVK not as a traditional political outfit but as a people-centric movement focused on employment generation, youth empowerment, clean governance, education reforms, accountable welfare politics, and anti-corruption measures.
In a move that surprised both the film industry and political observers, Vijay also declared his retirement from full-time cinema, stating that politics would now become his life’s mission.
The decision significantly strengthened public belief in his political seriousness and differentiated him from celebrities who briefly enter politics without long-term commitment.
Despite early scepticism from political analysts, Vijay rapidly transformed TVK into a formidable political force within just two years.
His biggest strength came from his massive fan base, with decades-old fan clubs evolving into highly organised booth-level political networks across Tamil Nadu. TVK also focused aggressively on youth-centric campaigning through social media outreach, digital engagement, public meetings, and direct interaction with first-time voters.

Unlike many established leaders, Vijay entered politics with relatively low political baggage, helping him project a cleaner and more relatable image. His cinematic identity as a protector of the poor, an anti-corruption crusader, and a challenger of the system seamlessly translated into his political messaging, allowing his film dialogues and screen persona to connect naturally with the electorate.
More importantly, Vijay’s speeches focused on dignity, opportunity, social justice, and Tamil identity rather than aggressive ideological attacks, creating a strong emotional bond with ordinary people.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election soon became one of the most closely watched political contests in India. Vijay contested from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East and secured convincing victories in both constituencies.
However, the biggest shock came when TVK won an extraordinary 108 seats in its very first Assembly election, a historic achievement for a newly formed regional party in Tamil Nadu.
The result shattered the long-standing assumption that the state could only be dominated by traditional Dravidian political giants and firmly established Vijay as a major political force.

Following the election with 108 seats, Vijay met the Governor and staked a claim to form the government, symbolising the rise of a new political generation powered by youth support, digital influence, and grassroots mobilisation built through celebrity appeal.
Now, all eyes are on Jos Vijay as Tamil Nadu closely watches whether the actor-turned-political phenomenon will officially become the state’s next Chief Minister.
