Tamil Nadu: Karur witnessed a devastating tragedy on Saturday night as a massive crowd surge at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s political rally claimed at least 40 lives, including eight children and 16 women. Over 60 others were rushed to hospitals after the stampede.
Though permission was granted for 10,000 people, nearly 35,000 supporters gathered at the venue.
Vijay, who arrived six hours late, began his speech amid the swelling crowd.
As people pushed towards the stage, barricades gave way, sparking chaos. The actor-turned-politician halted his address, appealed for police help, and personally distributed water to the fainted. Ambulances struggled to enter the packed grounds, worsening the crisis.
Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin confirmed the casualties and dispatched medical teams from Tiruchirappalli and Salem.
Meanwhile, the BJP has demanded accountability from the DMK government and questioned the lack of preparedness by the police.
