After the horrific stampede in Karur that left 40 people dead and many injured during a public rally organized by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay, analysts are discussing the reasons behind the incident.

It is obvious that the major cause that led to the stampede is overcrowding at the program venue, which attracted people far beyond the estimates, according to the police.

According to political analyst Sumanth C Raman, both the state government and district government are responsible for the unfortunate incident. He blamed the authorities for allowing the event without being able to foresee the crowd and arrange adequate security measures, including police forces. Given the actor-turned-politician’s popularity and past instances of events, it was already predicted that such a large crowd would convene, he pointed out, speaking in an interview with India Today.

Senior journalist Shekhar Iyer observed that both the organizers and administration had lapses in conducting the event. He noted that Vijay himself has articulated his fear that there are huge crowds at his road shows and public events and the police presence is inadequate. He wondered why there were not enough security arrangements for the event.
