Jana Nayagan, actor Thalapathy Vijay’s 69th and final film, before his complete focus on politics, has locked its release date. The H. Vinoth directorial has been generating immense buzz among the audience since its official announcement. With much more to come, the makers have now illuminated the flame with the release date announcement.
Jana Nayagan: Vijay’s Pongal treat
Initially planned for an October 2025 release, Jana Nayagan, the upcoming political thriller, has witnessed a sudden change of plans. The film, which was about to be delivered as a Diwali treat on October 17, 2025, is now aiming for another big festival in Tamil Nadu. As an unexpected turn, the film is now pushed to January 9, 2026, coinciding with the Pongal festival.
This announcement from the makers came with an interesting caption, citing famous lines about Pongal from Vijay’s blockbuster film Pokkiri (2007). It reads, “Adiyum othaiyum kalanthu vechu vidiya vidiya virundhu vecha. #JanaNayaganPongal 09.01.2026.”

Pongal releases of actor Vijay were always remained special for his fans. He had multiple successful Pongal releases with impressive box office records throughout his career. His films like Pokkiri, Master, and Varisu, which were released at this festival season, turn out to be a massive hit.
This history of success is planning to be replicated on the holiday season and interestingly, it aligns with Thalapathy Vijay’s growing political presence and 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. But it is worth mentioning that this is the first time in the last few years release date of Vijay’s film has been postponed.
Jana Nayagan cast and crew
Titled Jana Nayagan, roughly translated as People’s Hero or Democrat, the film also stars actor Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Priyamani and Gautham Vasudev Menon, among others.
The music is composed by the trending music director Anirudh Ravichander. With Sathyan Sooryan handling cinematography and Philomin Raj taking charge of editing, the film promises to be a technically sound and visually striking film.

Additionally, it has been almost confirmed that the film would be a remake of the Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, headlined by Nandamuri Balakrishna. It is also said that Vijay reportedly watched the Telugu film five times and was deeply impressed by its theme of women’s empowerment.
