Will Vijay’s Film 'Jana Nayagan' Hit Screens In February?

After weeks of legal uncertainty, actor Vijay’s much-awaited film Jana Nayagan is finally moving closer to release. A key development in the Madras High Court has cleared a major hurdle that had delayed the film’s arrival in theatres.

On Tuesday, the Madras High Court allowed the production house, KVN Productions LLP, to withdraw its writ petition filed against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The petition had sought a direction to the CBFC to issue a U/A 16+ certificate within 24 hours.

Justice P.T. Asha dismissed the petition as withdrawn after the producers informed the court that they had decided to accept the CBFC chairman’s decision to refer the film to a nine-member revising committee.

With the case now withdrawn, the certification process can move forward without legal obstacles.

The film was originally scheduled for release on January 9, 2026. However, certification issues led to an unexpected delay of over a month.

The producers had submitted the film under the Tatkal certification process on December 18, 2025. An examining committee watched the film the next day and, on December 22, recommended a U/A 16+ certificate, subject to certain cuts.

The production team accepted the suggested changes and resubmitted the edited version on December 24.

However, the process took a new turn when a member of the examining committee raised concerns about the absence of an expert on Army-related matters, as the film reportedly contains references to the armed forces. Following this complaint, the CBFC chairman put the certification process on hold on December 29.

On January 5, the producers were informed that the film would be referred to a revising committee for fresh consideration. The decision was uploaded on the e-cinepramaan portal on January 6, prompting the production house to move the High Court the same day.

After hearing arguments from both sides and reviewing the records, the court proceedings continued until the matter was finally withdrawn on February 10.

Sources indicate that certification could be granted soon, possibly with minor modifications. If the process moves quickly, the film may finally see a theatrical release in February.
