Jana Nayagan Release Date Update: Madras HC Allows Producers To Withdraw CBFC Case
In a major development that could finally clear the path for the release of Jana Nayagan, the Madras High Court today allowed KVN Productions to withdraw its writ petition against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The decision signals a possible breakthrough for the long-delayed Thalapathy Vijay-starrer, which has been stuck in legal and certification hurdles since January.
With the case withdrawn, Jana Nayagan will now move forward to the CBFC’s revising committee, bringing the film a step closer to certification and theatrical release. The matter is expected to be formally recorded before Justice PT Asha on Tuesday.
The move comes days after a division bench of the Madras High Court set aside an earlier single-judge order that had directed the CBFC to grant a U/A 16+ certificate.
The bench observed that principles of natural justice were not followed, noting that the CBFC had not been given adequate opportunity to present its case. It also termed the complaints against the film as “serious in nature.”
During earlier hearings, KVN Productions informed the court that all 27 cuts and modifications suggested by the examining committee had already been implemented.
However, the CBFC maintained that concerns remained regarding certain scenes, including the alleged portrayal of religious sentiments and the armed forces.
Originally slated for a Pongal release on January 9, Jana Nayagan—widely seen as Vijay’s swansong before his full-time political entry—was postponed indefinitely after failing to secure certification.

The delay reportedly caused significant losses to the Tamil Nadu box office and put pressure on the producers, with Amazon Prime Video also warning of possible legal action over release uncertainty.
Directed by H Vinoth, the political action drama stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, and Narain.
