Jana Nayagan Release Update: Madras HC Dismisses Case, Vijay’s Film Clears Legal Hurdle

In a major relief for the makers of Jana Nayagan, the Madras High Court has dismissed the case related to the film’s certification after allowing the producers to withdraw their petition against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

With this, all legal hurdles in the censorship issue have come to an end.

Justice P.T. Asha passed the order today, clearing the way for the film to move to the CBFC’s revising committee (RC) for re-examination.

The much-awaited Thalapathy Vijay-starrer is now one step closer to release, though an official date has not yet been announced.

The film was originally scheduled to be released on January 9, but did not receive certification in time. The makers had submitted the movie to the CBFC in December 2025 and carried out 27 edits suggested by the examining committee. The revised version was resubmitted on December 24.

However, a complaint raised concerns about certain scenes and dialogues. Objections reportedly included references to religious conflict and the portrayal of Army elements without a defence expert on the panel.

Following this, the CBFC chairperson referred the film to the revising committee.

The producers then approached the Madras High Court.

A single judge initially directed the CBFC to issue a U/A 16+ certificate, but the order was later set aside by a division bench citing procedural grounds. The matter was sent back for fresh consideration.

Jana Nayagan Release Date Update: Madras HC Allows Producers To Withdraw CBFC Case

After legal back-and-forth, including a brief move to the Supreme Court, the makers decided to withdraw the case and proceed with the revising committee process instead.

With the case now dismissed, the revising committee will examine the film and decide whether it will receive a U, U/A, or A certificate. The production team has said they do not want further delays and are hoping for a February release, but the final date will be announced only after certification.

Jana Nayagan is widely seen as Vijay’s final film before his full-time political entry with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, adding to the anticipation around its release.
